ABOUT US
When started: this project started in 2020 with 30 young women involved. The main objective was to empower women with entrepreneurial skills to enable them to support their families.
Description: in Turkana and other pastoralist communities, this responsibility has always been shouldered by women as men go to herd animals in far flung grazing fields. Besides, the number of single mothers has drastically grown in pastoralist communities due to many male deaths resulting from gun fire during cattle raids. Many families now have struggling orphans, widows and widowers that always turn to nearby churches for help/survival.
Achievements: under this activity, 26 young members are enlisted. Their ages range between 21 and 32 years. Among them are 16 women and 10 men. So far, the CDO team has carried out 4 trainings on entrepreneurship and finance management. The next step envisaged is to organize the members in 2 groups to start Village Savings and Loaning Association (VSLA) processes.
Challenges
-Lack of full-time staff to implement and sustain the project’s activities. The current team is comprised of volunteers.
-Vastness of the region and difficult road terrains during rainy seasons
-Weak logistics – we rely on the Bishop’s car to implement the project’s activities whenever he (Bishop) is ministering in the region.
-Financial constraints
-Lack of VSLA, financial management and entrepreneurship expertise by the community, pastors and staff that are involved in the activities
Mission is Give for People
Some People Need Help And We Give It!
Our Goal
CDO’s main goal is to contribute towards resolution of the inherent problems that affect the poorest of the poor among them nomadic pastoralists and vulnerable and marginalized groups. These inherent problems are manifested in conflicts, poverty, and inadequate access to water, sanitation and hygiene, and a degraded environment.
