Child Protection

CHILD PROTECTION PROFILE

Every child deserves to be free from violence, exploitation, abuse, neglect, and harmful practices. However, child abuse and violence is very high in Kenya that 1 in 2 kids experience violence as a child, according to the 2019 violence children survey implemented by the Ministry of Labour and social protection and sexual violence against girls is also prevalent with 1 in every 3 girls having experienced sexual violence during their childhood.

Calvary development organization has endeavored to particularly protect the more vulnerable and kids who lack parental love and care. These are children who are orphans, mentally ill and drug addicted parents. The founder Calvary development organization has fostered 50 kids in that category. The kids were thoroughly investigated to ascertain the situation of their cases to ensure they really need help. Children have strengths, capabilities and resilience, but their age, developmental stage, level of dependency, status, and lack of power and position in communities, mean that they are more susceptible to Violence, exploitation, abuse, neglect and harmful practices.

We advocate at both the national and county governments to increase budget allocations to child protection sectors during the budget process. We work to ensure transparency in decision making and accountability mechanism for the realisation of children’s rights.

Our interventions

Calvary development organization and its partners are taking effective steps to ensure that children are effectively protected through the foster care home we provide basic care and needs (shelter, food, clothe, education) to 50 kids between ages 2–18. This ensures the children receive the right support they need; parental care, protection, and safeguarding from abuse, violence, or exploitation.

We provide healthcare in day-to-day situations to the children, supplies lifesaving medicines, and ensure trained staff takes care of the kids. Collaborate with other child development groups and NGOs for healthcare access and staff training.

We ensure child protection mechanisms are strengthened to effectively incorporate accountability mechanisms by ensuring that the systems in place are effective and that they address child protection needs. Allocation of adequate funding also ensures that the existing child protection mechanisms are strengthened.

We put measures in place to ensure children are safe and protected. Positive discipline places emphasis on working with our staff to use techniques of discipline rather than punish children and supports zero tolerance on any form of corporal punishment.

Holding public baraza to sensitize the community on child protection policy and the importance of community involvement in child protection.

We have learnt that child protection violations are preventable and we will work with partners to target interventions on children at greatest risk of child protection violations. These include children with disabilities, children deprived of parental care, orphans and children experiencing other forms of discrimination and exclusion.
